A Firsthand Comparison of Steering Enhancements
When it comes to enhancing the steering performance of Yamaha jet boats, two of the most well-known options on the market are Cobra Jet Steering and JetBoatPilot’s Thrust Vector system. After spending over 25 hours using JetBoatPilot’s Thrust Vector and 20 hours with Cobra Jet’s Super Ultimate AK Deluxe, I’ve formed a clear opinion on which system best suits my style of boating.
While both products improve jet boat handling, the Cobra Jet system offers superior steering control across the entire speed range, from idle to trolling to high-speed operation. In contrast, JetBoatPilot’s Thrust Vector primarily enhances low-speed maneuverability but loses effectiveness at higher speeds due to its retracting design.

JetBoatPilot Thrust Vector: A Low-Speed Solution
JetBoatPilot’s Thrust Vector system is spring-loaded and retracts at speeds above approximately 5 knots. This design allows for improved slow-speed handling, which is helpful when docking, maneuvering in tight spaces, or idling through no-wake zones. However, once the boat reaches planing speeds, the system lifts out of the jet stream, meaning it no longer provides any additional control beyond the boat’s stock steering.
As someone who spends a lot of time trolling offshore at 7-10 knots, I found this to be a major limitation. With the Thrust Vector system, I noticed that the boat would veer off course unless I was constantly correcting the steering. At these speeds, the system simply wasn’t providing any meaningful benefit, and in some cases, it made maintaining a straight heading more difficult.
Cobra Jet Steering: Control at All Speeds
The Cobra Jet Super Ultimate AK Deluxe system, on the other hand, offers steering enhancements across the entire speed spectrum. Unlike the Thrust Vector, it does not retract at higher speeds. This means that whether I’m idling through a marina, trolling offshore, or cruising on plane, the Cobra Jet system provides consistent and reliable steering assistance.
One of the most noticeable advantages I found was course stability while trolling. With the Cobra Jet system installed, I could let go of the wheel at trolling speeds, and the boat would continue tracking straight. This was a night-and-day difference compared to the Thrust Vector, which often led to the boat wandering off course, requiring constant correction.
Additionally, at higher speeds, the Cobra Jet system maintains a more planted and predictable feel, improving overall handling and confidence behind the wheel. Whether navigating in rough conditions or executing sharp turns, the enhanced control is apparent.
Final Verdict: Cobra Jet for All-Around Steering Performance
Both the JetBoatPilot Thrust Vector and Cobra Jet Steering are high-quality products that serve their intended purposes well. If you’re looking for a strictly low-speed enhancement, JetBoatPilot’s Thrust Vector does the job effectively. However, if you want improved steering response across all speeds, including trolling and cruising, Cobra Jet is the clear winner.
For my style of boating—which includes a lot of offshore trolling and long-distance cruising—Cobra Jet’s system provides a significant advantage in both control and ease of operation. The ability to maintain a straight heading at trolling speeds alone makes it my preferred choice, and the added benefits at higher speeds further solidify its superiority.
If you’re a Yamaha jet boat owner trying to decide between these two options, I’d strongly recommend considering how you use your boat. For those who do a lot of trolling, cruising, or want better overall control at all speeds, Cobra Jet Steering is the way to go.
Thank you for your post It will assist others in their decision and since I do not make just one setup I also have spring loaded fins but they too are adjustable as well as work at all speeds or they can be set to rise up out of the water on plane so people can actually try both options if they wish and the second tie rod also adds to the stability of the nozzle alignment and the balance of both steering nozzles sharing the work rather than just 1.
